Recently John Coxon & Associates conducted a survey amongst our clients on issues of management in nonprofit organisations. We placed the survey online at Survey Monkey and emailed invitations out to around 100 people. We don’t pretend this survey was constructed by experts. The information was mainly for our own use as consultants however we found some of the feedback interesting and we are happy to share it with our readers.
25 people responded and participated in the survey. 76% are managers in nonprofit orgs, 16% are managers in healthcare and 8% are managers in aged care.
33% are frontline managers, 25% are senior executives (but not CEO’s), 17% are at the CEO level and 24% were in program/project or other management roles.
40% of managers are between 41-50 years of age. In total, 84% of managers are aged greater than 40 years of age. The survey suggests around 60% of managers will retire from the workplace over the next two decades. A conservative estimate suggests around 30,000 managers will retire from healthcare, aged care and the community sector in Australia and New Zealand over the next 20 years. In addition, sector growth means more managers will be needed during that period than are in service at present. The problem is this. Our next generation of senior managers is a very small pool of people. Only 16% of our survey. This suggests a serious shortage of people available for future management roles.
While 80% of those responding had tertiary level education in a management related topic, only 40% had either an undergraduate degree or post graduate degress. 40% had diploma/certificate level education and 20% obtained on-the-job training combined with short courses.
